Abstract
Tomato leaf curl disease (ToLCD), caused by tomato leaf curl begomoviruses and transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci, is an important constraint to tomato production. The present investigation was undertaken to assess the current status and distribution of tomato leaf curl virus (ToLCV) disease in major tomato growing areas of North Eastern Karnataka during rabi 2025-26. An intensive roving survey was conducted in Yadgir, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Ballari, Vijayanagar and Koppal districts. Disease incidence was assessed based on characteristic symptoms and calculated using the disease incidence formula. Typical symptoms observed in the surveyed fields included leaf curling, leaf puckering, reduction in leaf size, vein purpling, yellowing, stunting and reduced fruit yield. Considerable spatial variation in disease incidence was observed across the surveyed region. The district mean incidence ranged from 18.58 to 40.14 per cent, with the maximum incidence recorded in Raichur (40.14%) and the minimum in Koppal (18.58%). At the village level, disease incidence ranged from 6.08 per cent at Nittali to 61.47 per cent at Arsigera. Relatively higher incidence was recorded at Arsigera (61.47%), Chandrabanda (51.79%), Hemnur (51.26%), Kadgamdoddi (47.65%) and Kadaganchi (41.86%). Several weed species were also recorded around the surveyed tomato fields, which may contribute to the persistence of virus inoculum between cropping seasons. The present findings confirm the widespread occurrence and considerable spatial variability of ToLCV disease in North Eastern Karnataka.
